15TRT cameraman Sami Shehada loses leg in Israeli strike in Nuseirat
- PRESS on the vest, PRESS on the car — the strike came anyway.
- “Where is my leg?” — asked on camera, on a stretcher.
- CPJ demanded a probe into why journalists in marked gear keep being hit.
On 12 April 2024, Sami Shehada, a cameraman for Turkey's TRT Arabi, was severely wounded in an Israeli strike on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza and had his right leg amputated below the knee, with other journalists, including a CNN stringer, also injured in the attack. Shehada said the crew was wearing press-marked flak jackets and helmets and filming from a marked press vehicle in an open area when they were hit, and the Committee to Protect Journalists called for an investigation into the strike on journalists wearing press insignia; widely shared footage showed Shehada on a stretcher asking about his severed leg.
