16Targeted killing of Al Jazeera's Anas al-Sharif and the journalist death toll in Gaza
- A journalists' tent outside a hospital, struck deliberately — Israel confirmed he was the target.
- CPJ warned the smear campaign against him read like preparation for a killing. It was.
- The deadliest war for journalists ever recorded — more than both world wars, Korea, Vietnam, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan combined.
On 10 August 2025 an Israeli strike on the journalists' tent outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City killed Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif together with colleague Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa; the Israeli military claimed al-Sharif led a Hamas cell, an allegation Al Jazeera and the Committee to Protect Journalists rejected as unproven, with CPJ noting the accusations were a recurring smear and that the military had threatened him beforehand. According to CPJ, at least 192 journalists had been killed by Israel by the day of the strike (a figure that passed 200 by mid-2026), while Gaza officials and UN-cited counts put the toll above 240, and Brown University's Costs of War project found this to be the deadliest conflict for journalists ever recorded, with more journalists killed than in the US Civil War, both world wars, Korea, Vietnam, the Yugoslav wars and the post-9/11 Afghanistan war combined.
