09Sde Teiman detainee abuse case: base stormings and the fall of Israel's top military lawyer
- Soldiers were arrested for gang-raping a detainee — so a mob, ministers included, stormed the base to free them.
- Israeli television hosted a debate on whether soldiers have a “right” to abuse prisoners.
- The army's top lawyer went to jail over the case — for leaking the video, not for the rape.
On 29 July 2024, after Israeli military police detained reservists suspected of severely sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention facility, far-right mobs that included Knesset members and government ministers stormed the Sde Teiman and Beit Lid bases, while some Israeli lawmakers and commentators publicly defended the soldiers' actions against the detainee, according to Al Jazeera and CBS News. Leaked surveillance video of the alleged assault was broadcast by Israel's Channel 12 in August 2024, and in October–November 2025 Military Advocate General Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi resigned, was formally dismissed, and was arrested after admitting she had authorized the leak, according to CNN.
